Vegetarian Cats?

There are several companies and websites that promote vegetarian (no meat or fish) or even vegan (no animal products at all) diets for cats. These products appeal to people who have chosen a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle for ethical reasons, and want to apply the same principles to their cats.

As a feline veterinarian, I absolutelyl do not recommend trying to turn your cat into a vegetarian or vegan, but if you are determined to do so, here is my best guidance for you.

Products

The three most commonly used products are: Wysong Vegan, Vege-Cat, and Evolution. We will look at all three in turn.

Wysong Vegan clearly states that it is a supplement to be used with meat (either fresh or canned). It is not complete by itself. The website and packaging clearly state this, but unfortunately a lot of people don't read the label very carefully. Please be aware that despite the name, this is not a vegan cat food!

Vege-Cat comes in a supplement that you can add to other foods, and in a kibble mix that you make at home. Because of the increased risk of urinary tract disease in vegetarian and vegan cats, Vegecat products contain a urinary acidifier (methionine) to help prevent urinary tract problems; and they also produce a separate supplement that amplifies this effect. James Peden and HOANA (Harbingers of a New Age) were the original pioneers of vegan pet products. Their products are thoughtfully produced and time-tested. The book "Vegetarian Cats and Dogs" is an eye-opener.

Evolution makes canned and dry vegan foods for dogs and cats. While they take pride in the fact that they don't use any slaughterhouse waste, they do use corn gluten meal and soybean meal. Many cats have difficulty digesting soy, which along with soy's naturally high phytoestrogen content, makes this protein source inherently problematic for cats. Corn gluten meal contains about 60% protein, but also a large proportion of carbohydrates. Corn has a high glycemic index and is a key factor in the development of feline diabetes.

Evolution operates in an ethical gray area. Evolution's owner illegally reproduced and distributed copyrighted literature belonging to a non-profit animal rights organization. Numerous requests (and later, demands) from the non-profit organization to stop using its materials were ignored until legal action was imminent. Even today, their website makes outrageous claims about extending pets' lifespans that have no scientific basis in fact.

Cats and Non-Meat Diets

Cats, of course, were designed by nature to be exclusively carnivorous. The cat's body has many specific evolutionary adaptations to its expected diet of prey consisting mostly of protein, fat and moisture. While cats have managed, in general, to adapt to grain-based commercial foods, it is clear from many scientific studies that carbohydrate-based diets are in no way optimal for the feline.

Cats have an absolute requirement for the nutrients taurine and arachadonic acid that are found naturally only in animal products, with one exception: a type of seaweed that contains arachadonate. Taurine can be chemically synthesized (although the process is so environmentally harsh that all synthetic taurine used in the U.S. is imported from China). These additives can be used to make a diet that is chemically complete. However, natural sources of taurine and arachadonic acid contain many other amino acids, enzymes, co-factors, and other complex nutrients that may also be important for the cat's overall health. Science has shown us that whole-food derived nutrients are, in almost all cases, far superior and healthy than synthetic versions. For instance, ascorbic acid is the active ingredient in Vitamin C. However, natural Vitamin C contains many other components, including rutin, bioflavonoids, and other co-factors.

These diets all rely on chemical analysis to assess their nutritional adequacy. They follow the feline Nutrient Profiles established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) in 1990. However, these standards are out of date and will most likely be substantially revised based on the forthcoming National Research Council report on canine and feline nutritional requirements. Pet nutrition experts also agree that feeding tests are far superior to the Nutrient Profiles for assessing nutritional adequacy. Many pet foods that met these Profiles have proven to be dangerously inadequate when fed long term.

Cats consuming meat have a naturally low urinary pH; vegetables and grains cause the urine pH to be alkaline. While the food producers skim over this problem, the website Vegan Cats is at least honest about the risk. They recommend frequent testing of the cat's urine pH to make sure it is remaining in the normal range (6.5 or less).

High carbohydrate diets (which vegetarian and vegan foods are by definition) are also considered to be the primary risk factor for feline diabetes.

The truth is that science just doesn't know enough about the cat's nutritional needs to ensure the long-term safety of vegetarian and vegan diets for cats. While there are many anecdotal tales of cats thriving on vegetarian and vegan foods, it is a path that requires great commitment and a willingness to be flexible on the part of the guardian.

The ethical dilemma

I was a vegetarian/vegan for nearly 20 years, and I worked as a full-time animal rights activist for two years. So I understand the ethical reasons that lead people to avoid consuming many or all animal products. There's no doubt that the intensive "factory" raising and slaughtering of cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys and fish is truly a hideous industry that causes a great deal of animal suffering.

If you are considering a vegetarian rather than vegan diet, a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet has more flexibility by allowing dairy products and eggs as protein sources. However, you should know that in terms of suffering, animals raised to be food themselves are actually much better off than dairy cattle and egg-laying chickens, who live far longer and surely crueler lives as production machines, and still face death at the slaughterhouse when they are too worn out to be worth keeping.

The ethical dilemma comes home when we share our lives with pets who are by nature carnivorous, such as dogs, cats, ferrets, and reptiles. Of these, dogs are the most evolutionarily flexible. Dogs' nutritional requirements are quite similar to ours, so it is not at all difficult to include them in our animal-friendly lifestyle.

There is also the moral question of whether we should slaughter one animal (chicken or cow) to feed another animal (cat or dog). As one veterinarian asked, "Can we justify using parts of many other severely deprived and prematurely killed nonhuman animals to maintain each individual cat's well-being?"

Speaking strictly from a veterinary viewpoint, vegetarian and vegan diets for cats make me nervous. I have seen some very sick cats as a result of these diets.

Personally, I believe that when we voluntarily adopt cats into our homes, that we are ethically obligated to honor the feline spirit and feed it according to its basic nature. But everyone needs to answer that question from their own heart.

Why are there dogs that have a very foul odor? Even if you bathe them regularly, they still have that stinky smell in them. Sometimes dogs with bad odor lick themselves a lot, and actually pulling out their hair. They lick themselves often and their breath smells very bad after they do that. There are a lot of reasons why a dog stinks and there are also a lot of simple remedies to combat this. There are times when you even have to go to the vet just to cure and get rid of a dog’s bad odor. And of course you will spend more for this, like the vet’s fee and the medicated shampoos or soaps that will be prescribed. They say that a normal dog is odorless. When he starts to stink, it may be a malfunction of the sebaceous gland, caused by inadequate fat in the dog’s diet. Put your dog on a high fat content food and give him additional fat like chicken skin, bacon grease, butter or even a tablespoon full of vegetable oil; if you don’t have animal fat in hand. Liquid chlorophyll is a good remedy for stinky dogs. By putting a tablespoon or two of liquid chlorophyll mix with your dog’s water every day, you send the chlorophyll through their whole system. Chlorophyll has a slight mint flavor and most dogs love its taste in its water. Using liquid chlorophyll leaves the dog’s breath fresh all the time and it moves through the dog’s body and aids in digestion, cleanses the blood and helps neutralize odors that emanate from within your dog. And after it passes through your dog’s system it neutralizes the odor of your dog’s pee and poop. Another reason for the bad smell of a dog is the so called PH imbalance on the skin, in the digestive tract, the mouth or in the ears. A simple remedy for this skin imbalance is to have a vinegar rinse and ladies douches work to clear the odor. The acidity restores the PH balance. You can mix vinegar and water and bathe it to your dog and do it for few weeks. You can do the same thing with ladies douches, mix it with water and use the mixture in bathing your dog. Here’s another simple remedy for stinky dogs. In a large container, a sink or a tub; mix 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, ¼ baking soda, 1-2 tablespoons of dish soap. Now carefully sponge this over the offensive areas on the dog and be very cautious to not get any of the liquid to the dog’s eyes. Let it soak for 5 minutes or more and then rinse it off and now shampoo your dog with his regular mild shampoo and rinse again. Another good solution for the dog’s odor is to mix water with hand cream and Listerine. Mix it together in a spray bottle and spray it on your dog’s coat and rub it into their skin. The Listerine is anti bacterial and it takes away the smell, the hand cream works as a conditioner which makes the hair shiny and softens the skin. With the above mentioned remedies I am sure it will take away the foul odor of your dog. I am a dog lover for 20 years. If the dog is outside or inside when he begins to bark, go to him and say in a firm voice without yelling, „No bark!„ or „Be quiet!„ Then, when you have the dog’s attention, give him a treat and praise the dog calmly saying, „Good boy. No bark. „ Your dog will quickly learn the commands in hopes of obtaining more rewards. Commonly found among the larger breeds of dogs, Hip Dysplasia is an ailment affecting the hip joints. It is most prominent in pure breed dogs, such as Great Dane, Labrador, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. There are other breeds that suffer with hip dysplasia not mentioned here of course.

Until recently, not much was known about Hip Dysplasia. The most important thing to look at is the hip joint. In dogs, it is caused by the malformation of the hip. This ailment usually occurs when the dog is at a young age, while they are still growing and bones are forming. The hip, a ball and socket joint, ends up growing crooked, causing the back legs to be affected. The ligaments, muscles and connective tissues of the hip become lax, thus causing the hip to grow unnaturally.

When a dog is born, they usually have normal hips, but over time develop this lax muscle. Genetics plays a large role in this defect. As the bones grow apart, the capsule holding the bones together become strained and stretched, as opposed to growing towards each other as they should. This adds more problems to the joint as the two bones, pelvis and femur, get separated from each other. Therefore, the bones are no longer in alignment and put pressure on the nerves, which cause many of the symptoms of Hip Dysplasia.

Here are some of the signs of Hip Dysplasia.

Dogs feel pain after exercise and during a usual day's activity. They find it hard to stand on their hind feet in the early morning from stiffness. They tend to stop walking and sit down often. Very stiff hind legs. You can tell as they run, how they try not to put pressure on their back legs. Over time, dogs find it hard to stand up without assistance.

Things that can help Hip Dysplasia.

Try to keep your dog at a slim weight. An overweight dog will find it much more difficult to get around with added pounds. Most genetic cases can't be helped, but you can make it easier on your pet. There are some products on the market that are specifically for hip issues. There are even wheelchairs for dogs with this ailment. Another option is the "Helping Hands" from Mikki which enables the handler to take weight off of their dogs hind legs while still allowing the front legs to operate normally. This allows exercising and increased circulation.

I'm not sure how your dog is doing right now, but I want to let you know that if he is clumsy,has a wobbly gait which means that he has a swish to his walk, walks with his head down alot (because he is walking on his front half)which my Dakota did. He had great muscle mass in the front half of him because of this,but very little in the back.
Won't even attempt to jump up on your furniture, which is good but at the same time can show you that he doesn't want to use them back limbs.Goes to move your hand with his nose if you are trying to rub those back limbs in the hip joint area (because he is sore,so he is protecting them).sometimes they will literally stumble going up stairs etc..
Now I am not saying that this is definately hip dysplasia in your animal because i am no doctor but those are the things that went on with him and he had severe hip dysplasia.Just ideas,things to watch for and ask your vet about if you are noticing any of this in your animal...
These are things that I noticed when we had Dakota. Now, it was a little different with him because he had just been neutered so we weren't sure if things were going on with that at first or something else was going on until a few weeks had passed by and he just wasn't healing like we thought he should be so we made him a vet appointment thank goodness.

This is a short clip of him at the dog park, you will notice that he is happy playing but does not yet run all over like the other dogs. He will at first arrival but tires out pretty quickly still.
Did you happen to notice how well his fur is growing back?The stages are so weird, first it looks like he has a diaper on when he is sitting as in the picture above. Then it feels like razor stubble when it starts to grow back. Now it feels like a thick short wool.
If you are here, I am assuming that the reason has to do with a possible surgery coming up and you want to learn more and make the right decision.
I am so glad that you are doing this!!
First of all make sure that you read on the choices of surgeries if you haven't talked to your vet on that yet.
I am still worried that maybe the complete hip surgery may have been the way to go for him instead of the fho surgery.
He is out of pain which was my goal of course and it will never come back so I am told. But, he has such a swish still when he walks and pretty clumsy still.
I know it is early yet and hopefullly these things will still take care of themselves with time and muscle growth.
Just something to think about if you have a larger dog like I do.
Research,Research,Research you have one chance.
Make sure that you make the right one for you and your loved pet.

Hip dysplasia is a disease that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. It is caused by a combination ofgenetic and environmental factors. It can be found in many animals and occasionally in humans, but is most commonly associated with dogs, and is common in many dog breeds, particularly the larger breeds.

Hip dysplasia is one of the most studied veterinary conditions in dogs, and the most common single cause of arthritis of the hips. [1]In humans it occurs at a rate of about 1 births per thousand (0.1%)

Overview

Normal hip anatomy

In the normal anatomy of the hip joint, the femur (the thigh bone) is connected to the pelvis at the hip joint. The almost spherical end of the femur head (the caput, or caput ossis femoris) fits into the acetabulum (a concave socket located in the pelvis). The bony surface of the femur head and of the acetabulum are covered by cartilage. While bones provide the strength necessary to support body weight, cartilage ensures a smooth fit and a wide range of motion. Normal hip function can be affected by congenital conditions such as dysplasia, discussed in this article, trauma, and by acquired diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Dysplastic hip anatomy

In a hip suffering from dysplasia, two things are commonly abnormal. First, the caput is not deeply and tightly held by the acetabulum. Instead of being a snug fit, it is a loose fit, or a partial fit. Secondly, the caput or acetabulum are not smooth and round, but are misshapen, causing abnormal wear and tear or friction within the joint as it moves.

The body reacts to this in several ways. First, the joint itself is continually repairing itself and laying down new cartilage. However cartilage repair is a relatively slow process, the tissue being avascular.

So the joint may suffer degradation due to the abnormal wear and tear, or may not support the body weight as intended. The joint becomes inflamed and a cycle of cartilage damage, inflammation and pain commences. This is a self-fueling process, in that the more the joint becomes damaged, the less able it is to resist further damage. The inflammation causes further damage. The bones of the joint may also develop osteoarthritis, visible on an X-ray as small outcrops of bone, which further degrade the joint.^[1]

The underlying deformity of the joint may get worse over time, or may remain static. A dog may have good X-rays and yet be in pain, or may have very poor X-rays and apparently almost no problems. The hip condition is only one factor to determine the extent to which dysplasia is causing pain or affecting the quality of life. In mild to moderate dysplasia it is often the secondary effects of abnormal wear and tear or arthritis, rather than dysplasia itself, which is the direct causes of visible problems.

Causes and effects

In dogs, a femur that does not fit correctly into the pelvic socket, or poorly developed muscles in the pelvic area. Large and giant breeds are susceptible to hip dysplasia, and Cocker spaniels and Shetland sheepdogs are also known to suffer from it. Cats are also known to have this condition, especially Siamese.^[2]

To reduce pain, the animal will typically reduce its movement of that hip. This may be visible as "bunny hopping", where both legs move together, or less dynamic movement (running, jumping), or stiffness. Since the hip cannot move fully, the body compensates by adapting its use of the spine, often causing spinal, stifle (a dog's knee joint), or soft tissue problems to arise.

In dogs, the problem almost always appears by the time the dog is 18 months old. Richard Pitcairn theorizes that the hips of young dogs are weakened by heavy vaccination^[3]. The defect can be anywhere from mild to severely crippling. It can cause severe osteoarthritis eventually.^[4]

It is most common in medium-large pure bred dogs, such as German Shepherd Dogs, Labrador or Golden retrievers, Rottweilers and Mastiffs, but also occurs in some smaller breeds such as spaniels and occasionally (usually with minor symptoms) in cats.

Clinical detection and testing

Symptoms

Dogs might exhibit signs of stiffness or soreness after rising from rest, reluctance to exercise, bunny-hopping or other abnormal gait (legs move more together when running rather than swinging alternately), lameness, pain, reluctance to stand on rear legs, jump up, or climb stairs, subluxation or dislocation of the hip joint, or wasting away of the muscle mass in the hip area. Radiographs (X-rays) often confirm the presence of hip dysplasia, but radiographic features may not be present until two years of age in some dogs. Moreover, many affected dogs do not show clinical signs, but some dogs manifest the problem before seven months of age, while others do not show it until well into adulthood.

In part this is because the underlying hip problem may be mild or severe, may be worsening or stable, and the body may be more or less able to keep the joint in repair well enough to cope. Also, different animals have different pain tolerances and different weights, and use their bodies differently, so a light dog who only walks, will have a different joint use than a more heavy or very active dog. Some dogs will have a problem early on, others may never have a real problem at all.

Each case must be treated on its own merits, and a range of treatment options exist.

Diagnosis

The classic diagnostic technique is with appropriate x-Rays and hip scoring tests. These should be done at an appropriate age, and perhaps repeated at adulthood - if done too young they will not show anything. Since the condition is to a large degree inherited, the hip scores of parents should be professionally checked before buying a pup, and the hip scores of dogs should be checked before relying upon them for breeding. Despite the fact that the condition is inherited, it can occasionally arise even to animals with impeccable hip scored parents.

In diagnosing suspected dysplasia, the x-ray to evaluate the internal state of the joints, is usually combined with a study of the animal and how it moves, to confirm whether its quality of life is being affected. Evidence of lameness or abnormal hip or spine use, difficulty or reduced movement when running or navigating steps, are all evidence of a problem. Both aspects have to be taken into account since there can be serious pain with little X-ray evidence.

It is also common to X-ray the spine and legs, as well as the hips, where dysplasia is suspected, since soft tissues can be affected by the extra strain of a dysplastic hip, or there may be other undetected factors such as neurological issues (eg nerve damage) involved.

There are several standardized systems for categorising dysplasia, set out by respective reputable bodies (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals/OFA, PennHIP,British Veterinary Association/BVA). Some of these tests require manipulation of the hip joint into standard positions, in order to reveal their condition on an X-ray, and since this is very painful and must be held still for a clear image, often the animal will be anaesthetised or sedated to achieve clear diagnostic results.

Conditions which can mimic or replicate the symptoms of hip dysplasia

According to petsurgery.com, a veterinary practice in California, the following conditions can give symptoms very similar to hip dysplasia, and should be ruled out during diagnosis:

Cauda equina syndrome (i.e. lower back problems)
Cranial (anterior) cruciate ligament tears
Other rear limb arthritic conditions

They add that:

"Traditionally, the signs of hip dysplasia are rarely extreme. Usually, only mild to moderate lameness is noted which may suddenly worsen. Dogs with a cranial (anterior) cruciate ligament tear typically hold the affected leg up (which is unusual with hip dysplasia). Patients with back (spinal) problems often scuff their toenails when walking, have an uncoordinated gait, and are weak in the rear limbs. They may be very painful if they have a disc rupture (sciatica) or show no spinal pain in certain degenerative spinal cord conditions (German Shepherd myelopathy)."

It is also worth noting that a dog may misuse its rear legs, or adapt its gait, to compensate for pain in the forelegs, notably arthritis, osteochondritis (OCD) orshoulder or elbow dysplasia, as well as pain in the hocks and stifles or spinal issues. It is important to rule out other joint and bodily issues before concluding that only hip dysplasia is present. Even if some hip dysplasia is present, it is possible for a painful case of OCD or other diseases to be masked by mild dysplasia.

Long term pain

It is important to note that a dysplastic animal has probably lived with the condition since it was only a few months old, and has therefore grown up taking thechronic pain for granted and have learned to live with it. Dogs suffering such pain do not usually cry out or show it. Sometimes, they will suddenly and abnormally sit down when walking, or suddenly refuse to walk or climb objects which they usually would, but this can equally be a symptom of many other things, including a thorn in the paw, or a temporary muscle pain. So pain recognition is less common a means of detection than the visible gait and other abnormalities described above.

Treatment

Overview

There is no complete cure, although there are many options to alleviate the clinical signs. The aim of treatment is to enhance quality of life. Crucially, this is a congenital condition and so will change during the life of an animal, so any treatment is subject to regular review or re-assessment if the symptoms appear to get worse or anything significantly changes.

If the problem is relatively mild, then sometimes all that is needed to bring the symptoms under control are suitable medications to help the body deal better with inflammation, pain and joint wear. In many cases this is all that is needed for a long time.

If the problem cannot be controlled with medications, then often surgery is considered. There are traditionally two types of surgery - those which reshape the joint to reduce pain or help movement, and hip replacement for animals which completely replaces the damaged hip with an artificial joint, similar to human hip replacements.

Non surgical interventions

Non-surgical interventions include three elements: weight control, exercise control, and medication. Weight control is often "The single most important thing that we can do to help a dog with arthritis", and consequentially "reducing the dog's weight is enough to control all of the symptoms of arthritis in many dogs".^[5] Reasonable exercise stimulates cartilage growth and reduces degeneration (though excessive exercise can do harm too),^[5] and also regular long walks in early or mild dysplasia can help prevent loss of muscle mass to the hips. Medication can reduce pain and discomfort, and also reduce damaging inflammation.^[5]

Non surgical intervention is usually via a suitable non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ("NSAID") which doubles as anti-inflammatory and painkiller. Typical NSAID's used for hip dysplasia include carprofen and meloxicam (often sold as Rimadyl and Metacam respectively), both used to treat arthritis resulting from dysplasia, although other NSAIDs such as tepoxalin (Zubrin) and prednoleucotropin ("PLT", a combination of cinchophen and prednisolone) are also sometimes tried. NSAIDs vary dramatically between species as to effect - a safe NSAID in one species may be unsafe in another.^[5] It is important to follow veterinary advice.

A glucosamine based nutritional supplement may possibly be suggested to give the body additional raw materials used in joint repair. Glucosamine can take 3-4 weeks to start showing its effects, since it can take up to 6 weeks to reach full therapeutic effect in the body, so the trial period for medication is usually around 3-5 weeks minimum before assuming it isn't working. It's important to remember that glucosamine is not a medication, it's a raw material, so the body still takes considerable time to build more cartilage once it has access to this raw material. Note that the efficacy of glucosamine for such conditions is uncertain; it is supported by some veterinary sources, and considered unsupported by others.

It is also common, if necessary, to try multiple anti-inflammatories over a further 4-6 week period. This is since an animal will often respond to one type, but will fail to respond to another. If one anti-inflammatory does not work, a vet will often try one or two other brands for 2-3 weeks each, also in conjunction with ongoing glucosamine, before necessarily concluding that the condition does not seem responsive to medication.

Carprofen, and other anti-inflammatories in general, whilst very safe for most animals, can sometimes cause problems for some animals, and (in a few rare cases) sudden death through liver toxicity. This is most commonly discussed with carprofen but may be equally relevant with other anti-inflammatories too. As a result it is often recommended to have monthly (or at least, twice-annually) blood tests performed, to confirm that the animal is not reacting badly to the medications, if these are being used. Such side effects are rare but worth being aware of, especially if long term use is anticipated. (Main article: Rimadyl)

This regime can usually be maintained long term, for as long as it is effective in keeping the symptoms of dysplasia at bay.

Surgical interventions

If medications fail to maintain an adequate quality of life, surgical options may need to be considered. These may attempt to modify or repair the hip joint, in order to allow pain free usage, or may in some cases completely replace it.

Hip modification surgeries include excision arthroplasty, in which the head of the femur is removed and reshaped or replaced, and pelvic rotation (also known as triple pelvic osteotomy, or pubic symphodesis) in which the hip socket is realigned, may be appropriate if done early enough. These treatments can be very effective, but as a rule tend to become less effective for heavier animals - their ability to treat the problem becomes reduced if the joint has to handle more pressure in daily life. Pelvic rotation is also not as effective if arthritis has developed to the point of being visible on X-rays [2].

Femoral head ostectomy (FHO), sometimes appropriate for smaller dogs and cats, is when the head of the femur is removed but not replaced. Instead, the resulting scar tissue from the operation takes the place of the hip joint. In such surgeries, the weight of the animal must be kept down throughout its life in order to maintain mobility. FHO surgery is sometimes done when other methods have failed, but is also done initially when the joint connection is particularly troublesome or when arthritis is severe.

Hip modification surgeries such as these usually result in reduction of hip function in return for improved quality of life, pain control, and a reduction in future risk.

Hip replacement (since it completely replaces the faulty joint) has the highest percentage of success especially in severe cases, usually restores complete mobility if no other joint is affected, and also completely prevents recurrence. Hip replacement for dogs, can sometimes also be a preferred clinical option for serious dysplasia in animals over about 40 - 60 lbs (20-30 kg), a weight that excludes certain other surgical treatments. Other options under exploration include:

DARthroplasty(Dorsal Acetabular Rim arthroplasty) is a technique developed by Dr. Barclay Slocum and Theresa Devine Slocum whereby cortico-cancellous bone strips, taken from the iliac crest, are contoured over the femoral head and sutured to the dorsal hip joint capsule and packed with additional cancellous bone graft dorsally to eventually anchor to drill holes in the original dorsal acetabulum. The new "shelf" eventually becomes an extension of the original acetabulum, thereby providing support and eliminating subluxation of the hip joint. The joint capsule becomes the new joint surface.

Pubic symphysiodesis(also known as juvenile pubic symphysiodesis, or JPS), is a procedure for very young dogs that manipulates the way the pelvis grows to create a tighter hip. It involves cauterizing the growth plates of the pelvis, in other words, the part of the pelvis which would usually grow and spread in puppyhood, no longer does so. To compensate, the rest of the pelvis grows outward, in a manner which enhances the "socket" of the hip and provides better support than that dog would have had naturally. Since it relies on growth in puppyhood, it has a very tight window for surgery -- currently no sooner than about 4 months and no later than about 5 months. This is compatible with hip scoring of puppies at 4 months.

Capsular Neurectomy, is a procedure in which the hip joint capsule is de-nerved to reduce pain in the hip. This allows the dog to exercise moderately with less pain, thus preventing the leg muscles from weakening from disuse and providing less support to the bad joint. Both hips can be done at one surgery. This surgery should not prevent a future hip replacement, if a more complete fix is desired.

Additional Help

There are many products on the market now to help dogs suffering from hip dysplasia to get around. These consist of pressure-reducing pet beds, ramps, stairs, and steps built with wood, plastic, metal, or foam that help the dog get from one place to another without causing pain or hurting themselves further.

Now, this is a site that I found very interesting. Even though I don't believe some of the information. It is always good for you to read on both sides. The fho was not very positive in this article.

I did the fho because it is supposed to be the best for my dogs pain relief. Yes, he will have a swagger forever.

But, he is pain free. The total hip replacment may be better going into it, but a hip is not forever and you may end up doing the surgery again in so many years.

I did not want that for my dog.

I did not plan on him having this when I got him and I made the best decision for him, not for me so he would walk perfect and look perfect but for him and his pain and quality of life. I think for me I made the best decision.

But, everyone is different and your dog may benefit from a total hip replacement or other alternative.

Different breeds of dogs vary considerably in temperament. In deciding which breed would be most suitable for your needs and for the needs of your family, the distinctive temperament of the breed should be an important factor in your choice.
Obviously you cannot ignore practical considerations such as the size of your garden and the facilities you have for the dog to exercise. Some breeds of dogs obviously require more exercise than others. But do not ignore the natural, distinctive temperament of the breed you have chosen.
In order to make the task of choosing the breed of dog that best suits your needs a little easier, I have listed below the eight most popular dogs – according to A.K.C. registration figures – and given brief details about their temperaments.

The following list is in current order of popularity.

1. Labrador Retriever.Then Labrador is a medium sized dog of about 22 inches in height with very expressive eyes. An important reason for it’s popularity to the fact that it is generally an even-tempered, friendly animal that is particularly good with children.There are Labradors who have been trained to be quite effective guard dogs, but this is not a natural characteristic of the breed. But if is a lovable, friendly, affectionate, easy to manage and easy to train pet is what you require the Labrador is an excellent choice. Labradors are, quite understandably, the breed of choice with many eye-dog organizations.A Labrador can be a somewhat greedy dog and there is a tendency for the dog to put on too much weight if the diet is not controlled.

2. Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is a fairly large, friendly animal, standing about 24 inches at the shoulder and weighing approximately 80 lbs.

This is a highly intelligent, very lively, active breed. It has a delightful temperament, friendly and affectionate and is very fond of children. The Golden Retriever is very quick to learn and responds very well indeed to training. It must be mentioned however, that the Golden Retriever is not a natural guard dog. It is a breed that appears to have no inherited protective, guard instinct. It is possible this can be instilled with correct training but it is not a natural trait of the breed.

3. Yorkshire Terrier.
This handsome little terrier, with a beautiful silky coat, although only about 7 lbs. in weight, is reputed to be one of the most courageous small dogs willing to tackle anything.It is highly intelligent, friendly and lovable and can fit in easily in a very small home or apartment. It does not require a great deal of exercise.The “Yorkie”, as it is affectionately known is definitely a terrier in nature. It is bright, intelligent, lively and alert and in spite of its small size makes a very good, protective watchdog.

4. German Shepherd Dog
This is the breed that has been my personal favorite for many years. There is no animal as anxious to please, as easy to train and as adaptable as the well-bred German Shepherd.But I would like to stress the “well-bred” aspect. In this regard I must emphasize that I consider temperament is to a very large extent an inherited trait. For this reason it is imperative that before you select a German Shepherd pup, you know something about his parents and make absolutely certain they have sound, confident temperaments.If at all possible make a point of seeing both Sire and Dam.A German Shepherd Dog is not for everyone! It is not the type of animal that can be ignored, except at feeding time and left in the backyard to fend for itself.The German Shepherd craves attention. It is an animal that wants to be part of the family, which can be a definite disadvantage if you haven’t the time to give Shepherds the attention they need. This doesn’t mean that you have to devote all your spare time training the dog. But it does mean that you will have to spend a fair amount of time training the German Shepherd in basic obedience. The dog must learn to respect you. This is of vital important and comes with training.If you are willing to spend the time and effort in giving you German Shepherds the extra attention they deserve, you will be able to bring out the exceptionally fine qualities they have inherited from their ancestors.

5. BeagleThis is a dog that originated in England and was used for hunting rabbits. It is a very intelligent, good-natured animal that is easy to train. It also has a very good sense of smell.Although smaller than most hunting dogs, standing only about 14 inches in height and weighing less than 30 pounds, it is nevertheless a sturdy animal. It has a white coat with black and tan markings and large, hanging ears.This playful breed that was popularized though the “Peanuts” comic strips, that featured “Snoopy”, makes a delightful family pet because it is particularly fond of children.The Beagle is also very alert that and makes an excellent watch dog.

6. Daschund.The Daschund, a breed that originated in Germany, was originally bred to hunt badgers. In spite of its small size it was also used to hunt foxes. Because of it’s long body, loose skin and keen sense of smell, the animal was able to burrow underground.Although quite small, no more than 25 pounds, it is a sturdy, well-muscled animalThe Daschund has a delightful temperament, fun-loving, undemanding and very affectionate. They do not require a great deal of exercise and are quite content to lie around.In fact because of this they should not be over-fed otherwise they have a tendency to become overweight, which is of course unhealthy for any breed.They are also inclined to bark unnecessarily. But his can be corrected with training. They are intelligent animals and although sometimes inclined to be obstinate, they will respond to firm, but gentle correction.

7. Boxer
This breed also originated in Germany and was the result of the crossing of dogs of the bull breed variety and terriers. A well-bred Boxer has a great deal to offer. It is an animal that is exceptionally good with children. Because of its size – about 24 inches at the shoulder and between 65 and 70 lbs in weight, this muscular dog, with correct training can prove to be a useful guard dog.

A decided advantage of the Boxer is the fact that coat is short and requires very little attention in so far as grooming is concerned.Boxers are capable of being trained and a number have done reasonably in competitive Obedience work. Sometimes they are not quite as quick to respond to commands as other working dog breeds, but once they understand your command they seldom forget.
They are lovable very affectionate animals that generally get on well with other dogs.

8. Poodle.

The poodle is reputed to be the most intelligent of all breeds - with good reason. It is a remarkably intelligent animal, very responsive and very easy to train.It is very playful lovable animal that very often attaches itself to one member of the family. Because it is suspicious of strangers it can also be a very good guard. Although it is sometimes a noisy dog, this alertness can be very useful when there is also a larger, guard dog in the home. The Poodle is alert to every strange sound.A great advantage of the Poodle is the fact that it is the only breed that does not shed it’s coat. This can be of inestimable value if there happens to be member of the family who is allergic to dog’s hair. Genetics plays an important role in the expression of Hip Dysplasia and it has been observed that there is a 25 to 85% chance of a dog inheriting this problem from its parents. The dog's environment also plays an important role in observing signs of Hip Dysplasia.

In fact, a good environment can suppress onset of Hip Dysplasia, even in those dogs whose parentage had it earlier. These are some of the things you should take care of. Symptoms include sudden lameness, or the inability to walk properly in Hip Dysplasia and Golden retrievers having it are also likely to get arthritis when they grow older.

Nutrition plays a vital role in Hip Dysplasia and Golden retrievers with proper nutrition have been able to arrest growth rate and reduce the potential to develop Hip Dysplasia. You need to make sure that your dog is not overweight and is eating the right amount of fat and protein. The idea is not to starve the animal, but to give it the right nutrition and watch its weight.

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Disgusting and disturbing – that's how the Cook County Sheriff describes a dog fighting ring in Chicago.

Three men now face charges. As CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports, officers actually busted in, right in the middle of the fight.

Police say a dog they found was close to death, curled up in a corner barely moving when they entered the building. It was wounded in a fight with another dog – a dog that had to be held back from lunging again.

"One was half dead, the other covered in blood," said Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart. "We had a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old child in there, we had a pregnant woman in there. Guns, syringes, you name it…we had it in there."

Police say dozens of people paid a $5 cover to pack into the basement and bet on which dog would be strong enough and vicious enough to survive.

The other could barely stand when carried out on a stretcher.

"It was bad. I mean it was so covered in blood that it was hard to tell where all the wounds were at," Dart said.

Investigators found a fighting ring, 3mm handguns, and a rule book, too.

"These people are so sick and twisted, that they had, I found a tackle box and in it were syringes with amphetamines in it. They also had like a staple gun to staple the dog back together if it was cut open too bad. They even had an IV as well if they wanted to pump the dog up with any type of drug,' Dart said.

Now three men face felony dog fighting charges in the case.

Police say 38-year-old Donaver Jones, of Riverdale, owned the more aggressive animal.

Melvin Trent, 37, and Timothy Norris, 35, of Joliet, tell police they owned the dog mauled in the event.

A man who lives in the home says he didn't think anything illegal was taking place in the home.

"I don't know what they're talking about," he said.

He said he wasn't at the house when the raid took place.

Some 50 people who were there, though now face misdemeanor charges.

This is the first time the Sheriff's Department has broken up a dog fight as it was happening.

Workers at the city animal shelter had to euthanize the dog that was so badly injured.

Police tell the man who owned the survivng dog was also arrested two years ago in a dig fighting bust in Livingston County.

Today, I'd like to share 5 habits to keep your dog healthy. Let's get right to it.

1. Regular Physical Exams . Visit your veterinarian frequently for a routine exam. Since dogs age so much faster than us, yearly exams can help identify problems early. Be prepared to tell your vet about any changes in your dog's stamina, appetite or behavior, when it began and what might have triggered it.

2. Groom Your Dog Often . Bathe and groom him at least once a week. Brushing removes dead hair and helps to stimulate blood flow to the skin. As you brush him, take note of any bumps, skin lesions or unusual hair loss and report abnormalities to your veterinarian.

3. Brush your dog's teeth daily . Tooth brushing staves off tooth decay and helps prevent gum disease and tooth loss. Brushing regularly will also allow you to notice mouth and tongue ulcers early on. Note any increase in "doggy breath." Dogs have their natural smells and dog food can linger on their breath, but a change in breath to the point that it becomes strong or offensive can signal various illnesses.

4. Encourage Exercise . Exercise helps your dog maintain muscle tone, keeps his heart and digestion healthy and even improves his attitude. Walk or play with your dog at least twice daily.

5. Provide Good Nutrition. Feed your dog a good quality food formulated for his life stage. Stick with a good quality premium food and feed that amount that maintains an ideal weight. Always provide fresh, cool water.

Monitor your dog. Watch his urine and bowel movements for abnormalities. Be aware of any changes in his attitude or habits to identify problems early.

Preventable dog conditions

So today I want to provide some specific tips on how to avoid 6 "preventable" conditions.

Here are some things you can do to ensure your dog stays healthy.

1. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) - This disease is most often genetic and cannot be prevented. It is most common in Dachshund dogs due to a genetic problem with the disc. You can minimize the chance of this problem by preventing your dog from jumping off the bed or furniture. Provide a ramp if needed to assist your dog getting off and on furniture.

2. Gastric Torsion (Bloat) - This is a life-threatening condition resulting from a distended stomach that rotates into an abnormal position (torsion). Untreated, it results in death. It is most common in large breed deep-chested dog (such as the Great Dane). Many veterinarians will prophylactically "pexy" or stabilize the stomach to prevent it from occurring in susceptible breeds. If you own a Great Dane, standard poodle, Saint Bernard, Gordon setter, Irish setter, Doberman pinscher, Old English sheepdog, or Weimaraner- you may want to discuss this with your veterinarian. Other things you can do to help prevent his condition is to divide meals into 2 or 3 meals per day rather than one large meal. Feed a mixture of canned food and dry food. Avoid elevated feeders. Any diet changes should be made gradually over a period of 3 to 5 days. Feed susceptible dogs individually and if possible, in a quiet location. When buying a dog, ask about family history of bloat and stay away from breed lines with a prominent history.

3. Foreign Body Ingestion (Small Intestine) - This condition is entirely preventable. A foreign body is caused by the ingestion of an object that can't pass through the intestine. Common objects include underwear, socks, pantyhose, coins and toys. How can you prevent it? Closely supervise your dog to ensure that he doesn't ingest household items. Provide indestructible toys such as the Kong®. If your dog chews and ingests anything - call your veterinarian or local emergency clinic immediately.

4. Cruciate Rupture - This condition is due to a rupture of a ligament in the knee. It is difficult to prevent, as you cannot predict how or when it will happen. It can occur to any dog at any time when running or playing. You may minimize the changes by resting your dog when he is tired. Don't over exercise him.

5. Foreign Body Ingestion (Stomach) - This condition is also preventable. This is similar to condition #4 but the foreign object is caught in the stomach rather than the intestine. Keep all items that your dog might ingest out of his reach. Observe his behavior when playing with toys to ensure he doesn't try to "eat" them.

6. Pin in Broken Limb - This condition is a fracture or broken bone, which is treated with a surgical pin to stabilize the bone. Broken bones can be preventable. Many broken bones in dogs occur from being hit by a car. You can prevent this by ensuring your dog is on a leash and does not run free. In small or toy dogs, broken bones can result from being dropped or stepped on. Take special care with small dogs

My beautiful Dakota went outside this morning. It was a wet cool day,and he decided to play with the neighbor dog a black lab named Pepper.
When I went outside to go to work, this is what I found ~above~ picture!
He was rolling in what used to be grass yesterday and was very proud of himself..
He had to be washed 3 times in the shower to get all of the mud out, lol.
I laughed as I called Heather outside,let her look at Dakota and then said see ya later buh-bye and giggled all the way to the car,as I left her with my now mud covered but still adorable dog.
He smelled great and looked good as new when I got home!

Why Dog Parks Are Bad

In a perfect world dog parks are great. The world is not perfect and neither are dog parks. For the following reason I think people should stay away from them at all costs:

Dog parks are a cesspool of diseases. Lots of dogs don’t have the correct vaccinations, since owners don’t care enough. Some dogs are not even on flea medications. Since owners rarely pick up their dogs waste the door park is literally a minefield of dog poop with all sorts of diseases coming with it.

Now,this I put in here mostly for people to understand that they need to do there part at a dog park.

I personally love the dog park alot. He is not always locked up,we do exercise him,he is up to date on his shots.

I do worry about the other dogs at times: How do you not. But, I do my part for him so I do not want to take away the fun and experience he has at the park with the other dogs.

Their will always be the people that do not do there part I am sure, you just have to use your best judgement.

The park I go to every owner seems to be great at picking up right after their dogs poop,and if they don't see it someone will surely let them know.

Puppies,it is probably not the best place for them until they've been fixed and had their shots and can handle themselves with the bigger dogs.

Children, please do not bring them! The dogs run,jump and WILL run over or knock over your child guaranteed.

My question is, what are the signs of Hip Dysplasia? I have a muscle bound,
vibrant 112 pound mutt, GSD/Bloodhound/Lab/ Ridgeback- those are the breeds
that I can see him in readily- that is a Super Frisbee player, he can leap 3
feet up in the air to catch the Frisbees and Loves the game. But sometimes
his legs go out from under him and sometimes it looks like his hind legs

My 8 yo GSD has been diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia. She has been
given Rimadyl in the past for a flare but suffered from bloody diarrhea
and vomiting after 4 days of treatment. At the same time she was also
started on Cosequin DS. Obviously she should not be given Rimadyl
again but I have a couple questions regarding treatment:

I have a four year old American Bulldog who has paresis in his hind legs
that is progressively getting worse. The best way to describe his
condition is that his rear end looks drunk. We had his spine and hips
X-Rayed and looked at by both a neurologist and radiologist. In both
cases they didn't see anything that might be causing this. We ran tests
for Neospora Caninum and Toxoplasmosis , the Neospora Caninum test came
back negative, but the Toxoplasmosis test came back with a slightly
elevated levels. However my veterinarian feels that this may have been
from a previous exposure and is not causing his current condition. To be
on the safe side my vet prescribed Doxycline and wants to test him again
in a few weeks to determine if these low levels are declining or
increasing.

Local kids pick Obama in landslide

Like their parents across the Northland and adult voters across the country, local kids on Tuesday chose
Barack Obama as their next president.

Based on ballots counted in Duluth, Superior, Esko and Cloquet through Kids Voting, young people voted
overwhelmingly for Obama. Students at Hermantown Middle School participate in a similar exercise
unaffiliated with Kids Voting that also resulted in a win for Obama.

Kids Voting allows underage youth to participate in the democratic process in hopes that they will stay
involved once they turn 18, said Lars Sandstrom, executive director of Kids Voting Minnesota.

“If kids develop the habit of being informed voters while they’re young, they are more likely to continue to
be once they turn 18,” Sandstrom said.

Ava Point started her voting record this year at the age of 4. Like the majority of her peers, she voted for
Obama.

“He makes better choices than McCain,” Ava said at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Duluth’s Endion
neighborhood. “I think McCain is a blowfish.”

Every now and then dogs vomit. Sometimes it is a one time thing and they are fine. But sometimes it is a problem that requires medical attention. In fact, vomiting is the most common reason dogs are seen in veterinary emergency rooms around the country.

Let me share a story that is all too common and will illustrate this point. The story comes from the Colucci family and their dog Sara.

Here is their story:

Sara was a healthy dog and only used to go to the vet for checkups. One day Sara suddenly became ill. The veterinarian wasn't sure if she had an obstruction and suggested running a barium test, which the Colucci's didn't hesitate to do. Sara's is more than just a dog - she is a part of the Colucci family ! Like most of us, the Colucci's would do everything possible help Sara get well. There is another important point to this story... the Colucci's planned ahead and had the peace of mind of having pet insurance to help with the cost of expensive exams and x-rays.

Luckily Sara didn't have an obstruction, but she was diagnosed with Gastritis. "Gastritis" is the medical term for inflammation of the stomach. Most commonly - it is treated with drugs to stop vomiting and fluids. Often, no food is offered until the gastric upset is improved, after which a bland diet is started.

Sara's case is not uncommon. This could happen to any one of us . It happens to many, many dogs every single day -- it could happen to you and your dog.

Gratefully, Sara recovered and is doing great! However, Sara's Veterinary bill was $909.60 -- OUCH! Fortunately, Sara's was covered by pet insurance which helped the Colucci's deal with the financial impact of this large unplanned expense.
